The inspiration for this short film came not only from my own fears and questions about re-entering the dating scene as a middle-aged man and a virgin to GRINDR and dating apps, but also from the deep divide I was hearing in the gay world, in all age groups, about monogamy vs. open relationships. Much of it was a surprise to me and I found the struggle and questions extended to the heterosexual world as well. With the only rule being “no rules” and everyone having their own interpretation and permutation of what a relationship is, how do you find someone who’s right for you? As I worked on the story, the challenge became to balance and honor both men’s point of view and to stimulate the audience to wrestle with the questions as well, asking where their own hearts align. I am inspired by the simplicity and honesty of the work of Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi (A SEPARATION), and his willingness to trust the humanity of the actors to speak for itself. To present, not preach.
